During early 2012, Esri released an updated design of their high profile World Topographic Map. This map is designed to be used as a basemap by GIS professionals and as a reference map by anyone. The map includes administrative boundaries, cities, water features, physiographic features, parks, landmarks, highways, roads, railways, and airports overlaid on land cover and shaded relief imagery for added context. The re-design took 10 months to complete. For more information on the design of the map, the research undertaken and the concepts behind the design please read, “Changing landscapes: Designing the next generation of online Topographic Maps“, by Damien Demaj.
